How to Create a Great Business Logo

When you think about some of the biggest companies in the world, such as McDonald’s, Target, Walmart, etc., what is one of the first things that comes to mind? If you are like most people, you see the logos in your mind’s eye. As a business owner, you need to come up with a logo that people are going to remember. When someone mentions your business, that logo should immediately come to mind. You have a couple of options. You can hire an expensive designer to create your logo. Or, you can use the tools at your disposal and do it yourself. These days, with all of the online tools available, you don’t even need to be artistic to create great logos. Here are some tips to get you started.

Think about the Message

Think about what you want your logo to say. Do you want to come across as very serious, or as a business that is lighthearted? How is your business different from the competition? Who are your target audience? These are all things that you need to consider when you are designing a business logo.

Consider Your Business Name

Your business name [2], and the type of business, need to be considered when creating a logo. For instance, if you have a restaurant, you want the logo with bold lettering and images to really stand out. On the other hand, if you operate a funeral home, the logo should be quiet and more demure, with a classier font and little to no graphics.

Use a Free Design Tool

There are loads of great free web design tools you can use that will help you create great logos, even if you have no graphic or artistic skills. A great tool to use, which is also free, is the Shopify Logo Maker [3].

Show the Benefit

The main benefit of your business should be illustrated in your business logo. Let’s say you run a plumbing company. Many people like to be able to have fast or after-hours service. Your logo can illustrate this, such as by using a lightning bolt to represent speed, or a clock to represent after-hours services.

Keep it Simple

A good business logo should be clean and simple. It should look great on a larger scale, such as a billboard, and it should look just as great on a business card. So, simplicity is best, because it is scalable and easy to reproduce. It is better to use icons than photos, because they stand out more. Your logo should also look great in both color and in black and white.

Avoid Clip Art

The last thing you want is to have a logo that looks like a million other logos out there. That is exactly what will happen if you use clip art. Not only is it boring, it is also way too easy for others to copy. You need original artwork that will make your business logo really stand out.

Check Out the Competition

Take a look at the logos that your competitors are using. You want your logo to stand out, so people will think of your business first. If they are using flashy graphics, your logo should be more toned down. Look at ways you can make your logo different from the rest.

Avoid Trends

Some companies tend to change their logos as trends change. Do not do this. People actually do like things that stay the same. Take a look around your local super market, and watch what others are buying. Most of the time, they are buying products that they have been buying for many years because they trust them, and the logos on these products have changed little, if at all, which gives customers a sense of comfort.
