Getting older is, unfortunately, a process none of us can do anything about. Looking older is something we have a little more control over.

Young skin looks full and smooth because it is well hydrated. As we age, though, the ability of our skin to hold moisture deteriorates. As a result the skin becomes looser and prone to lines, wrinkles and troughs.

What is Restylane?

Restylane is an injectible gel designed to correct wrinkles and enhance lips. Formulated from hyaluronic acid, a substance found abundantly in young skin, it enables the dermis (the middle layer of skin) to retain moisture by binding water molecules. The increased moisture content results in firmer, younger-looking skin and the filling out of facial lines and troughs.

What Areas of the Face Can Be Treated?

Crow’s feet, forehead creases, nasolabial folds (the lines/troughs running from nose to mouth), orbital troughs (around the eyes) and glabellar lines (between the eyebrows) are all good candidates for Restylane treatment. Lips, cheeks, chin and even the back of the hands are also commonly treated.

What Can I Expect?

The treatment must be administered by a medically qualified person and is often undertaken at an appearance medicine clinic. A fine needle is used to inject the gel into the dermis at a number of points below the target area. A typical treatment takes about 30 minutes and a topical anaesthetic is sometimes used to make the procedure more comfortable.

The results of a Restylane treatment last about six months and the procedure must therefore be repeated twice-yearly to maintain the effect.

How Do I Prepare for a Treatment?

Avoid alcohol, drink plenty of water and avoid exposure to strong sunlight before the procedure. Medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, St John’s Wort, and high doses of Vitamin E may increase bleeding and bruising at the injection site. Discuss any medication you are taking with your appearance medicine practitioner prior to your treatment.

After-Treatment Care and Recovery

Immediately after your treatment you may experience redness, swelling, tenderness and itching. These are all normal symptoms and should disappear within a few days.

Again, drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol. Try not to touch the affected area for 6 hours after the treatment and avoid applying cosmetics and moisturisers to the skin.

If you are planning to undergo any additional facial procedures e.g. facial waxing, laser treatment, Glycolic peel etc. wait until at least 2 weeks after your Restylane treatment.

A Younger Looking You

Dermal filling is a great alternative for those who do not want to make the leap to full-blown cosmetic surgery. Quick, relatively painless and with a rapid recovery time, it’s an ideal treatment for those of us who’d like to look as young as we feel!
