Has your once shiny jewellery lost it’s sparkle? But you haven’t got the time or money to get it professionally cleaned? Then here are some tips on how to keep your prized possessions looking pretty for longer!
You don’t need to go out and spend money on specifically branded jewellery cleaners – one that you make at home can bear just as good results. However, one thing to remember is that gold and silver are porous materials meaning that the use of an abrasive, such as toothpaste or baking soda, will cause long term damage. Instead, fill a bowl with warm water and add some soap, washing up liquid or a little bit of white vinegar. Give this a good mix and voila, you have a home made cleaning solution.
Once your solution is ready, take the jewellery that you need to clean, place into the mixture and leave it to soak. How long you will need to soak your jewellery for will depend on how tarnished it is. However, you should avoid leaving it in the solution overnight or throughout the day – approx 2 hours should be enough.
Don’t expect the grime to just fall off your item of jewellery; you will probably need to put in some elbow grease to make it really shine. Once the jewellery has soaked in the solution, take a non-abrasive cloth and gently rub the item, focussing on areas that are particularly stained.
When you’re satisfied that you’ve removed all the grit and grime from your piece of jewellery, give it one last dip into your cleaning solution then leave to dry in a warm area.
Prevention Is Better Than Cure
Although cleaning your jewellery can be done at home quite easily, it doesn’t mean that you don’t have to take care when wearing your prized possessions. Believe it or not, silver remains less tarnished the more you wear it! If you refrain from wearing it for long periods of time, the silver reacts with the sulphur in the air and becomes more discoloured.
