Nachos are a great Mexican treat, perfect as an accompaniment to drinks (ice cold Coronas) or as a starter for a Mexican feast. The dish is inexpensive and quick to make, but be warned, it’s also so tasty that your family will demand a repeat performance. Learn how to make quick and easy nachos with our nachos recipe.

Nachos – the Basics

Nachos use four quintessential Mexican cuisine ingredients: tortilla chips, refried beans, guacamole and salsa. Nachos should always be served while they are still warm. Unfortunately they don’t store well, though this is unlikely to be a problem as soon as friends and family get a whiff of this traditional Mexican dish!

How to Make Nachos

Ingredients:

  • Tortilla chips
  • 125g refried beans
  • 55g salsa
  • 55g sour cream
  • 85g grated cheese
  • 55g guacamole

Method:

  1. Place a layer of tortilla chips on an ovenproof plate.
  2. Use a spoon to dollop the refried beans over the tortilla chips.
  3. Sprinkle the cheese evenly over the beans/chips.
  4. Place in a preheated oven and bake at 180˚C for 5 minutes.
  5. Remove from oven – use an oven mitt or pot holder to avoid burning your hands.
  6. Drizzle salsa over the nachos.
  7. Place the sour cream in a single blob in the middle of the place (this way you can dip your nachos in it).
  8. Place spoonfuls of guacamole at intervals in a ring around the cream.

Arriba! Your nachos are ready to eat.

Nachos Variations

To make a fresher tasting plate of nachos try using Pico de Gallo instead of salsa. This is a crunchier, healthier and perhaps more traditional nachos condiment. To make Pico de Gallo just finely chop tomatoes, jalapeños, onion and coriander and mix together.

You can also make a beef nachos variation by using chilli con carne instead of refried beans.

Chilli Topping

Here’s a quick recipe for a chilli topping that you can use on nachos.

Ingredients:

  • 1 onion
  • 500g minced beef
  • 1 can red kidney beans – rinsed and drained
  • 1 teaspoon of chilli powder or a fresh chopped chilli
  • ½ cup of tomato paste
  • 1- 2 teaspoons of ground cumin
  • ¼ cup of water

Method:

  1. Chop and fry the onion until clear.
  2. Add mince and cook until well browned.
  3. Add kidney beans, tomato paste, cumin, chilli and water and simmer for 10 minutes.

Note: cook this topping until it is thick. If the chilli topping is too wet it has a tendency to make the tortilla chips soggy.
