When you are cooking, making sure that you are using fresh ingredients is one of the things you should always check. Food professionals, chefs and caterers agree it’s no good trying to make food using old or rotten produce. Knowing which the freshest ingredients are can help make your food look and taste better.
For the purpose of this guide I will be eggs-plaining a tried and true method of how to tell if eggs are good. Once you have read this guide you should have an idea of what is a good egg and what’s a bad egg and how to tell the freshness of an egg.
You will need
- 1 clear bowl (at least 5 cm deep)
- Cold water (tap water is ideal)
- As many eggs as you want to test
Testing Your Egg
To test your egg simply place your egg into the bowl of water gently and leave for 10 seconds. The older an egg is the more it will float.
Its a Good Egg
The freshest eggs (the good eggs) will lie sideways on the bottom of the bowl, completely submerged in water (usually they rest on their side). These eggs are best used for frying poaching or any other cooking method involving the egg as a main ingredient.
Its an OK Egg
An egg that is a little old but still ok to eat will start to float and either have its top or its bottom floating towards the surface of the water. These eggs are still ok to eat but are better to be used for baking and other dishes where the egg is used as a binding agent or a secondary ingredient not for its flavour.
Its a Bad Egg
If an egg floats on the surface of the water and not touching the bottom of the bowl you have a bad egg. These eggs are not recommended for use in anything as they will have gone stale and or rotten. It is strongly recommended to throw these away
