Serious health problems, injuries or illnesses simply happen when they happen – it’s not like you’re immune to them. And it’s certainly not like you can reschedule them to a time when you’re better financially equipped to deal with the inevitable costs involved!

A serious health issue can literally put your life on hold. To get back to the life you enjoyed before falling ill or becoming injured, you need to get the best advice and medical treatment available – and you need to get it fast!

Why ‘health insurance’ when the public system is free?

New Zealand’s public health system has always provided first-class treatment for accident and emergency cases, and it always will. However, when it comes to other health issues – especially critical ones like treatments for cancer, you can spend many months (and sometimes years) on a waiting list.

Sometimes, you DON’T HAVE ‘months or years’… and in these situations there can only be one outcome.

If you have health insurance, you won’t have to wait; you can access high quality treatment and medical care immediately.

Choosing the right health insurance plan

If enjoying the protection and peace of mind of a soundly structured health insurance plan is what you’re looking for, here are some tips you can follow to ensure you make the right choice:

  • Get 100% medical health insurance cover – the costs of hospitalisation and follow-up treatment and care are huge these days.
  • Get cover for non-surgical treatment as well i.e. chemotherapy, dialysis etc.
  • Specialists – make sure that your health insurance plan cover visits to the specialist both before and after treatment, and that it also covers the cost of any tests requested.
  • GP’s & Dental Costs – Most plans either charge horrendous additional fees for the privilege, or they don’t cover them properly. Not worth having.
  • Limits & Maximums - typically, health insurance plans can cover your medical costs in two ways: a) a set dollar value assigned to each and every treatment and procedure, or b) a total amount that the plan will cover i.e. $300,000 for surgery. The second option (b) makes much more sense.
  • Pre-existing conditions - they’re not covered. That’s why it’s so important to take out health insurance while you’re still young – so that any subsequent condition is then covered for life!

Choosing the right insurer

This is a job best left to your insurance broker. He or she knows the ‘ins and outs’ of all major health insurance providers. Plus, they can make doubly-sure you give the correct information on your application. They’ll also help you when it’s time to make a claim.
