How to Choose a Personal Trainer

It is extremely important that you meet a personal trainer before you make any commitment to them or yourself. You must get along with your trainer, and have respect for them. Otherwise the relationship won’t work and you won’t put in your best effort.


All personal trainers must have a CPR and First Aid Certificate. Most PT’s will have a qualification, so check this out also. However some PT’s are extremely competent from experience alone.

At your initial session, your PT should discuss with you:

- your goals / needs / wants

- your current health and fitness, as well as your history in this area, and any past injuries

- what has / hasn’t worked for you in the past

- why you contacted a PT and what your expectations of them are

- conduct a medical / health screening (questionnaire) along with measurements and other quantitative measures

- prices, terms and conditions, policies etc (make sure you read anything you are signing).

You need to feel comfortable with the trainer and the environment in which you will be training. If it doesn’t feel right for you, you won’t achieve the results you want.
