Implementing water saving techniques around the house is an easy, yet effective way to reduce your household costs. Just like turning off a light when you leave a room, replacing a worn washer on a leaking tap will reduce your water consumption and save you money. Here are a few handy tips…

About The Home

  • Repair dripping faucets replacing washers or other components when required.
  • Install your water heater close to the kitchen, bathroom and laundry to minimize the distance water has to travel.
  • Single lever mixer taps allow you to pre-select the hot-cold ratio, thereby saving the water that goes down the drain while you try to get the right temperature.
  • Install flow regulators into the tap which reduce the flow and aerate the water to restrict water flow while maintaining water pressure.
  • Install a rainwater tank.
  • Install a grey water diverter.

Laundry

  • Wash clothes only when you have a full load.
  • Use cold water whenever possible in operating the washer.

Kitchen

  • Use the dishwasher only when you have a full load.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance on units. Adjust door latches and replace worn door gaskets, especially on the fridge and the oven.

Bathroom

  • Install a low-flow showerhead.
  • Install a dual flush toilet as they use up to 60% less water.
  • Have a short shower instead of a bath. Short showers save water and power.
  • Turn the tap off when brushing your teeth, just wet your brush and fill a glass for rinsing. A running tap uses about 16 litres of water per minute.
  • Fill the sink or basin with a little warm water for rinsing. Don’t rinse your razor under a running tap.
