Have you terracotta or concrete plant pots on your deck or in your garden? Plant pots made of porous materials of this sort are better for the health of your plants than impervious plastic containers.

Terracotta and concrete pots allow the plant roots to ‘breathe.’ However, such porous materials also allow moisture to penetrate. The moisture encourages the growth of algae, moss and mould on the surface of the material and when the water freezes in frosty weather it expands and causes cracks, chips and damage to the material. Eventually the pot will break.

Protect Your Pots

Terracotta and concrete pots can be sealed with Kiwicare Red Brick and Terracotta or Masonry Sealers. These sealers prevent moisture penetration and damage from frost, but they still allow the roots of plants to ‘breathe.’ The silicone in the sealers also help to prevent build up of unsightly algae, moss, mould and mildew. There is also a bonus benefit that plants and soils are more easily removed from pots when transplanting as the roots and soils will not adhere to the pots.

Which Product?

NO Leaks Masonry Sealer is diluted with water before use and is easily applied with a sprayer, paint brush or roller. However, be aware that it can cause sublimation of insoluble salts that will show up as white marking on darker materials. The white bloom is very difficult to remove and so Kiwicare developed NO Leaks Red Brick and Terracotta for use on darker materials where the salt bloom would be unsightly.

NO Leaks Red Brick and Terracotta concentrate should be diluted with Kiwicare Red Brick and Terracotta Solvent before application. There is also a handy ready to use aerosol version of Red Brick and Terracotta.

NO Leaks silicone sealants have many other uses around the home. They can be used to seal ornamental ponds, prevent penetration of water into walls, concrete floors and slow the discolouration of pavers and patios.
