How to Choose a Moving Company

Moving house is often described as one of life’s most stressful experiences. However, both the anxiety of the experience and the potential for material loss can be reduced by choosing the right moving company.

Begin by compiling a list of moving companies to approach. Consider things like reputation and whether or not a particular company has been recommended by people you know. Is the company an accredited member of any professional moving association or trade body? Can it provide referrals from satisfied customers? How long has it been in business?

Moving Company Check List

Make a checklist of points to cover off with the prospective companies:

  • Do you need them to pack your possessions, or will you do this yourself?
  • Will the removal company have to carry fragile or valuable items?
  • Do you need to buy packing materials from them?
  • Do they provide insurance?
  • What quantity of belongings will you be moving – how many rooms?
  • What is the proposed date of your move?
  • How will your belongings be transported?
  • Will they send someone to your house to estimate the cost of moving?

Quotes

Get at least three quotes. Get them in writing and make sure they are fully explained to you by the removal company’s representative. A quote should cover areas such as:

  • An estimation of the time required to complete the move.
  • Chargeable mileage.
  • Number of rooms involved in the move.
  • Supplies (boxes, packing material, tape etc.).
  • Number of men on the job.
  • Cost of insurance (including any excess).
  • Total cost.
  • Limitation of additional costs due to over-charging.

To ensure that you are able to move on a date that suits you, you should book your moving company at least 4 – 8 weeks in advance. It is worth remembering that removal companies are often busy on Fridays and weekends and at the end of the month and that it maybe easier and cheaper to move on a day outside these times.
When you have booked a company you feel happy with and fixed your dates, remember to confirm your arrangements with the company a week before the big day.

By spending a little time researching moving companies, by comparing the services they offer and the prices they charge, by checking their reputation and recommendations, the choice you make is far more likely to result in a move which, if not exactly a pleasant experience, at least does not turn into a disaster.
